Costruito dal
Conte Cesare Mattei al termine della seconda metà dell’Ottocento sulle rovine
di un santuario anticamente voluto da Matilde di Canossa, il Castello si
presenta come un curiosissimo esempio di architettura eclettica, tipico del
periodo in cui fu costruito. La curiosità sta nello stile, tipicamente
orientaleggiante, moresco, con le sue torri sormontate da cupole "a
cipolla" che tanto ricordano il medio oriente islamico. Il Castello era méta di personaggi illustri e
nobili da tutta Europa: Imperatori, Principi e Zar, i quali venivano qui a
curare i loro acciacchi, sottoponendosi all’allora nascente arte medica
dell’elettromeopatia, disciplina nella quale allora il Mattei era specialista e
pressoché unico praticante, e alla ineguagliabile quiete di questi verdi
luoghi. Grazie a quest’arte terapeutica il Mattei si arricchì enormemente e
contribuì non poco allo sviluppo economico e sociale di quello che, altrimenti,
sarebbe probabilmente rimasto per diversi anni ancora poco più che un piccolo e
sperduto borgo abitato da gente semplice e contadina. Fu proprio il Mattei che
portò la ferrovia (la Porrettana) in questi luoghi allora sconosciuti e
dimenticati che divennero così, almeno fino all’avvento della Direttissima, uno
dei più nevralgici punti del traffico ferroviario nazionale, con quanto che vi gravitava
attorno (commercio, trasporto di merci via rotaia, spedizioni, turismo, ecc…),
sia per Riola che per i paesi limitrofi, con particolare riferimento a Porretta
che vide, grazie alla comodità del treno, moltiplicarsi i pellegrini in cerca
di un salutare bagno termale. Purtroppo,
durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, il Castello fu completamente svuotato dalle
razzìe dei militari tedeschi (e non solo...) che non lasciarono nulla dei
preziosissimi arazzi, delle tappezzerie intessute di fili d’oro e degli
inestimabili arredi antichi e col passare degli anni, sottoposto all’abbandono,

On the
road from Bologna that leads to Pistoia, the famous Porrettana, we will come
across two small and interesting towns Vergato and Riola di Vergato. In the
close by hamlet of Montecavalloro is located the “Nucleus of Costonzo”,
interesting example of fortified rustic architecture (XIV-XVI century), also
famous for being the seat of the first medieval medical school in the Bologna
Apennine. The Rocchetta Mattei is on the other hand located on the northern
side of the Apennine. Built in the second half of the XIX century, it mixes a
variety of styles, ranging from the medieval to the Moorish style. It was the
residency of the Count Cesare Mattei, literary man, politician and self-taught
physician founder of electrohomeopathic medicine, on the roots of homeopathic
medicine. At the inside of the Rocchetta the count lives a life of true lord of
the castle, medieval style, and gets to the point of creating a court lifestyle
with the presence of a minstrel. The castle’s goal was that of being the seat
of the new world medicine the Count spread with great success all over the
world and also accommodated distinguished figures coming from all over to be
cared for. The fame of the Rocchetta rose along that of the Count and the
electrohomeopathy, in which the powers of the herbs and that of botanical
electricity are combined. The count owned pharmaceutical industries all over
and from all over the world people were coming to be cared for any kind of
diseases: it seems that even famous people such as Ludwig III of Bavaria and
Alexander II of Russia have been guests at the Rocchetta. In 1925 it was
visited officially by the Prince of Piedmont. Even Dostoyevsky mentions the
Count in “The Brothers Karamazov”, when he narrates to the devil of being
