La Mutoid Waste Co. nasce a Londra dall'incontro fatale tra alcuni Artisti- Meccanici-Punk;

la Compagnia viene fondata da Joe Rush e Robin Cooke alla fine degli anni '80 e crea installazioni, mutazioni di veicoli ed ogni genere di opere inedite a partire dai rottami,

ispirandosi all'estetica dei fumetti 2000AD.

La Compagnia si sposta poi in Europa dove nel suo più puro stile traveller

crea leggendarie installazioni e Warehouse Parties tra Parigi, Barcellona e Berlino.

Nel 1990 i Mutoids, invitati dal Festival Internazionale dei Teatri, approdano sulle sponde del fiume Marecchia a Santarcangelo di Romagna; la compianta Sindaca Garattoni decide che possono stabilirsi temporaneamente nell'area di una vecchia cava di ghiaia ormai dismessa: è proprio qui che inizia la storia di Mutonia, la nostra comunità di artisti, che negli ultimi 35 anni ha instaurato un rapporto simbiotico con la cittadinanza Santarcangiolese

instaurando una convivenza estremamente apprezzata da ambo le parti.

La cava abbandonata nel tempo si è trasformata nell'attuale Parco Sculture, da sempre ad ingresso libero e gratuito; in Mutonia le sculture si fondono con le strutture di utilità nel postulato

dell'inesistenza di una separazione tra Vita ed Arte.

Mutonia è stata formalmente riconosciuta, in due importanti pareri della Sovrintendenza ai Beni Mobili di Bologna e della Sovrintendenza ai Beni Paesaggistici di Ravenna, quale "Bene Cittadino";

dai pareri risulta anche un generale miglioramento a livello Paesaggistico

apportato all'area dell'ex-cava dalla Comunità di Artisti.

Il Comune di Santarcangelo, in accordo con il Commissario Di Nuzzo, basandosi sui due pareri crea un apposito strumento urbanistico, il POC tematico Mutonia, per regolarizzare l'area;

di tale strumento viene riconosciuta la legittimità anche in una sentenza del TAR.

Sfortunatamente nel gennaio 2025 il Consiglio di Stato, su istanza di un concittadino, emette una devastante sentenza che considera Mutonia principalmente sotto la prospettiva strettamente urbanistica, ed ordina al Comune di procedere ad un atto di demolizione di tutte le strutture.

Noi tutti ci auguriamo fortemente che, avendo la "nostra" ex-cava visto ormai avvicendarsi ben tre generazioni di Mutoids, la storia di Mutonia possiamo continuare a raccontarvela al presente.

The Mutoid Waste Co. was born in London out of the fateful encounter between a few Artists-Mechanics-Punks; the Company was founded by Joe Rush and Robin Cooke in the late 1980s to create installations, vehicle mutations and all kinds of unprecedented works of art from scrap,

inspired by the aesthetics of 2000AD comics.

The Company then moved to Europe where in its purest traveller style it

created legendary installations and warehouse parties in Paris, Barcelona and Berlin.

In the nineties the Mutoids, upon invitation of Santarcangelo's International Theater Festival, landes on the banks of the Marecchia River; the late Maire Garattoni decided that they could temporarily dwell in the area of a disused gravel quarry: that was the beginning of Mutonia, our community of artists which over tha last 35 years has established a symbiotic relationship with Santarcangelo's citiziens,

a cohexistence that is highly appreciated on both sides.

Over time the gravel quarry has evolved into the current sculpture park,

which always welcomes visitors free of charge.

In Mutonia sculptures merge with utility structures postulating the inexistance

of a separation between Life and Art.

Mutonia has been formally recognized by both the maximum Italian Artistic and Environmental-Landscaping Authorities, which stated that it is a "Citizien's Asset" and that it also has significantly shown a general improvement at landscape level, brought to the area by the Community of Artists.

The Municipality of Santarcangelo, in view of these declarations and in agreement with Special Commissioner Di Nuzzo, created a special urban planning instrument, the Mutonia thematic POC,

to regularise the area, and the legitimacy of this instrument was also recognised

by a ruling of the Regional Administrative Court.

Unfortunately, in January 2025, the Council of State, at the request of a citizen, issued a devastating ruling that considering Mutonia exclusively under a strict urban-planning perspective ordered the municipality to proceed with an act of demolition of all the structures.

We are presently holding up all hopes that, as ‘our’ former quarry has now seen as many as three generations of Mutoids, we will be given the chance to continue narrating

the story of Mutonia in the present tense.
