Secondo i ricercatori del Centro Nazionale per le
Ricerche Scientifiche di Parigi le dune del deserto producono un canto udibile
anche a chilometri di distanza che può raggingere oltre i 100 db di intensità
Il fenomeno si realizza con l’attrito dei grani rotolati
dal vento o calpestati, quando i granelli sono ricoperti di una leggera patina
di silicio e raggiungono la velocità di 0,45 metri al secondo (1,62 Km/h), con
uno strato di sabbia in movimento di 2.
I deserti non producono lo stesso canto ma sono diversi
tra di loro ed hanno con tonalità che spaziano dal DO maggiore al SOL minore:
Quelle di Sand Mountain in Nevada cantano note nella
tonalità di Do maggiore, due ottave sotto il Do centrale.
Nel deserto cileno le dune cantano nella tonalità di Fa
maggiore
Le dune del Marocco cantano in Sol minore
