Una piccola bambina. Una GRANDE speranza.
La Piccola Amal, giovane rifugiata, si imbarca in un viaggio straordinario, una traversata epica che la porterà ad attraversare la Turchia e l’Europa. Per trovare sua madre. Per tornare a scuola. Per cominciare una nuova vita. Il mondo glielo lascerà fare? Riuscirà a fare qualcosa che oggi sembra così impossibile?
A seguito dell’incredibile successo internazionale di The Jungle, Good Chance in collaborazione con Handspring Puppet Company, acclamati creatori di War Horse, presentano un nuovo, inedito e straordinario progetto: Il Cammino, festival itinerante di arte e speranza a sostegno dei rifugiati, sotto la direzione artistica di Amir Nizar Zuabi.
Nel 2021 Il Cammino coinvolgerà celebri artisti, importanti istituzioni culturali, gruppi comunitari e organizzazioni umanitarie, dal confine tra Siria e Turchia fino al Regno Unito, per creare una delle opere di arte pubblica più innovative e avventurose di sempre.
Al centro de Il Cammino c’è la Piccola Amal, un burattino alto 3,5 metri che raffigura una giovane rifugiata, creato dalla celebre Handspring Puppet Company. In rappresentanza di tutti i bambini sfollati, molti dei quali separati dalle loro famiglie, la Piccola Amal percorrerà oltre 8.000 km per incarnare un monito: “Non dimenticatevi di noi.”
In questo momento di straordinari cambiamenti globali, Il Cammino rappresenta un’altrettanto straordinaria risposta artistica: un’odissea culturale che trascende i confini, la politica e la lingua per raccontare una storia nuova di umanità condivisa e per far sì che il mondo non dimentichi i milioni di bambini sfollati, ognuno con la propria storia, resi oggi ancora più vulnerabili dalla pandemia. Oltre ai nomi qui elencati, centinaia di persone sono coinvolte nella realizzazione de Il Cammino: i nostri amici e partner in tutta Europa e in Turchia, i gruppi delle comunità che partecipano al programma educativo Step Forward, i finanziatori e sostenitori internazionali del progetto. Il Cammino celebra il potere trasformativo dell’arte e della comunità. Senza la crescente comunità di artisti e sostenitori coinvolti, nulla di tutto questo sarebbe possibile.
“Più di cinque anni fa, Joe Robertson e Joe Murphy mi hanno invitato a unirmi a loro nel campo profughi di Calais. Da questa esperienza è nata Good Chance, che segna un punto di svolta nella mia vita e che mi ha permesso anche di incontrare gli amici e colleghi di Help Refugees. Da allora la situazione già grave dei rifugiati è peggiorata e continuerà a peggiorare. Il viaggio della Piccola Amal è un progetto artistico unico che mi auguro possa aiutare i rifugiati a superare alcuni dei traumi che hanno vissuto, unire le comunità e portare l’attenzione sul prezioso e positivo contributo che i nostri amici rifugiati hanno dato e continuano a dare.”

Little Amal, a young refugee, has embarked on a remarkable journey – an epic voyage that is taking her across Turkey, across Europe. To find her mother. To get back to school. To start a new life. Will the world let her? Can she achieve what now seems more impossible than ever?
Following the phenomenal international success of The Jungle, Good Chance, in collaboration with world-famous creators of War Horse Handspring Puppet Company, is presenting its most extraordinary work yet: The Walk – a travelling festival of art and hope in support of refugees, with Artistic Direction from Amir Nizar Zuabi.
In 2021, from the Syria-Turkey border all the way to the UK, The Walk is bringing together celebrated artists, major cultural institutions, community groups and humanitarian organisations, creating one of the most innovative and adventurous public artworks ever attempted.
At the heart of The Walk is ‘Little Amal’, a 3.5 metre-tall puppet of a young refugee girl, created by the acclaimed Handspring Puppet Company. Representing all displaced children, many separated from their families, Little Amal is travelling over 8,000km embodying the urgent message “Don’t forget about us”.
At this time of unprecedented global change, The Walk is an extraordinary artistic response: a cultural odyssey transcending borders, politics and language to tell a new story of shared humanity – and to ensure the world doesn’t forget the millions of displaced children, each with their own story, who are more vulnerable than ever during the global pandemic.
Little Amal represents the thousands of children who, just like her, have fled war and persecution and need access to education and essential support to rebuild their lives. Little Amal is at the heart of The Walk, one of the most ambitious artworks ever created, produced by Good Chance Theatre under the artistic direction of Amir Nizar Zuabi and producers Stephen Daldry, David Lan, Tracey Seaward and Naomi Webb. Little Amal was created by Handspring Puppet Company.
As well as those listed here, hundreds are involved in making The Walk happen – our friends and partners across Europe and Turkey, the community groups taking part in our education programme, our international funders and supporters. The Walk celebrates the power of art and community to make change. Without our growing community of artists and supporters, it would not be possible.
“Over five years ago Joe Robertson and Joe Murphy invited me to join them in the refugee camp in Calais. This was the start of Good Chance. Since then the plight of refugees has escalated and will continue to do so. The journey of Little Amal is a unique arts project that will, I hope, help heal some of the trauma that refugees have suffered, unite communities and bring attention to the valuable and most positive contribution our refugee friends have made and continue to make.”
